THE COASTAL STEAMER QUAY

The quay was constructed in 1935. At the same time the sound between Finnholmen and the rest of Henningsvær was closed off by the breakwater. This had the effect of reducing the water flow and had the effect of increasing a calm-water work area.

Henningsvær had daily visitsfrom local steamers and express boats, this supported local trade and the shipment of goods in and out of Henningsvær, at this time the population was approx. 1500. Connections with the major towns of Harstad and Tromsø to the north provided a vital link all the way down to Bodø, (115 kms south) and beyond. Steam gave way to diesel, and economic changes saw the decline of the local transports.
